The Harry Chapin Tribute Concert was held on what would have be Harry's 45th birthday on December 7, 1987 at Carnegie Hall in honor of Harry being awarded the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal. This concert was also videotaped and a television show produced for PBS and was broadcast in the early 1990's, generally as a draw for fundraising.

Cartoonist Gary Trudeau also produced a poster for this benefit concert.

A Harry Chapin Tribute was released in 1990 featuring many of the performances from the concert. Pat Benatar's version of "Shooting Star" was included on her 1999 CD release, Synchronistic Wanderings.
