Bummer is a Harry Chapin song released on the Portrait Gallery album. This is a tale of a war hero who returns home from the Vietnam War. His life spirals down into a life a crime before he is killed by police. The Rolling Stone review of Portrait Gallery focused on this song as to what was wrong with the album and in broader sense Harry's music. "A single verse from 'Bummer' side two's 9:57 soap opera, says more about this album than I could ever hope to say: His mama was a midnight woman/His daddy was a drifter drummer/One night they put it together/Nine months later came the little black bummer".
