Hands Across America

The Hands Across America event in May 1986 was a fund raiser for homeless causes with over 6 million people forming a human link across America. Ken Kragen, Harry's manager, planned and organized this event. 

This 30 minute video released in 1987 is hosted by Daniel J. Travanti. It  features a brief shot of Harry singing the latter patter of Taxi. Ken Kragen, also credits Harry as being the genesis of this event and many of the other hunger and humanitarian artist-driven events of the 1980's. 

Ken Kragen says it this way in the video:

The inspiration for We are the World... Hands Across America... for all my activism in the area of hunger came from Harry Chapin. 

I'd been active in a lot of social causes, but never the issues of hunger and homelessness until I started managing Harry Chapin.

[ Cut away to Harry singing "Keep the Change" from Taxi.] 

And Harry got involved passionately, as he did with everything, and became the most active humanitarian in the issues of hunger and homelessness. He was articulate and...
