Long Island Cares Long Island is a charitable organization that provides food bank other other services for Long Island poor. Long Island Cares was founded in 1981 just a few months of Harry's death to fight hunger and poverty on Long Island. Today, it serves more than 350 soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, senior nutrition centers, and day care centers. Long Island Cares sponsors the Harry Chapin Humanitarian Awards.
