Harry Chapin dies at the age of 38. Harry's musical, Cotton Patch Gospel, which he was finishing at the time of his death premiered later in the year, as Steve and Tom keep Harry's voice alive by bring the musical to the stage.

January

  • 8 - Harry starts first of a three night engagement of the Bottom Line in NYC. These six concerts (two per day) were the basis for the first release of the Bottom Line Encore Collection series. This was billed as his 2000th concert. The Bottom Line web site tells an entertaining story about negotiating the terms for this show.[1]. The concert on this night was broadcast on WNEW.

March

April

  • 22 - Harry appears at Purdue University.[2]

May

  • 16 - Harry gives commencement speech at SUNY Geneseo. [3]

July

  • 16 - Harry Chapin died in an automobile accident on the Long Island Espressway.

October

  • 21 - Cotton Patch Gospel - opening night premier at the Lambs Theatre in NYC. Harry wrote the music and lyrics and brother Tom directed the musical.
