January Harry plays live dates at the Bottom Line in NYC that are later released in 1998 as The Bottom Line Encore Collection: Harry Chapin.
24 Billboard Magazine has a pictures of Harry at the Bottom LIne. 
February 28 Harry performed at the Phoenix Symphony Hall.  One fan's experience is recalled at Harry's Friends web it an article entitled "Who the Hell was that Guy" (See section 5 in the articles index).
March 12 Coliseum in Spokane, Washington. On the same bill were John Prine and Steve Goodman.

Portland Oregon Civic Auditorium Source: concert ticket on sale at eBay.

June  25 Harry's last TV appearance with Tom Chapin.
July  Steve Goodman was scheduled to perform at a benefit with Harry but falls ill before the show. 
Ken Kragen, Harry's manager, placed an ad of condolences in Variety that also announced the Harry Chapin Memorial Fund.
16 Harry dies on the Long Island Expressway.
August 8 Billboard Magazine announces the formation of the Harry Chapin Memorial Fund.
September 3 Rolling Stone has a feature article remembering Harry Chapin. Stevie Nicks was on the cover.
October 21 Cotton Patch Gospel premiered at Lambs Theater in NYC. It ran for 193 shows.
