Looking...Seeing This was the Harry's only published book. The first section of the book contains poems, the second contains lyrics to a selection of his songs. Each song or poem includes a drawing by Rob White. The following are annotated comments come from Sam on the Little Jason HC message board: The First time I saw Harry's poetry book was at a Walden's in the mid-'70s. (Harry had not yet started selling stuff at his concerts. That was Ken Kragen's idea, and one of the reasons Harry switched to him as manager). Anyway, the one with Harry's picture on the cover (same one later used on Elektra Gold Medal 2-CD) was the earliest edition. It was published (if memory serves) by Thomas Crowell. Later, Harry published the book himself --re-issuing his book, printing his own copies with a new cover--the Rob White cover. As far as I know, there was only one printing of the Crowell edition. There may have been two printings of that version--not sure. Two sad postscripts: After Harry's death, Rob White sued the estate for royalties on the poetry book. White won: Harry gave all his proceeds to charity; White never agreed to forego his share. Second ps: Harry finished almost enough poems for a second poetry book, under the working title, "The Book of Eyes." It'd be nice if some enterprising publisher would pursue a follow-up to "Looking...Seeing," done the same way. Part poetry, part song lyrics. BuyThis book is available from the Harry Chapin Foundation for US$10.00 Signed copies go for over US$100 on eBay. |
